Dive Brief:
- Lexington, KY-based Waste Services of the Bluegrass (WSB) has purchased residential waste hauler Legacy Carting, headquartered in London, KY.
- WSB's purchase of Legacy adds 27,000 residential customers in the central Kentucky area, connected to several long-term municipal contracts.
- WSB additionally began operating the Bluegrass Regional Transfer Station in Lexington (BGRTS), a public-private partnership with Lexington Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG). The transfer station will handle 80% of Lexington residents’ waste.
Dive Insight:
The two deals are big moves to help Waste Services of the Bluegrass broaden its business, while creating efficiencies and job growth.
"We are excited to be partnering with LFUCG, and the seamless transition of BGRTS into our operations gives us a key platform allowing us to service our customers more efficiently," said W. Todd Skaggs, WSB president and CEO.
Mergers and acquisitions have been a major trend in waste and recycling lately, partly because the option to expand allows for greater efficiency in the market. Similar companies, such as K2 and Waste Management, have acquired multiple haulers this year alone.
