Dive Brief:
- Oakland, CA Mayor Jean Quan announced a tentative agreement has been reached to put a trash contract dispute with hauler giant Waste Management to rest.
- The terms of the deal would see Waste Management haul the trash and organic waste for Oakland while California Waste Solutions (CWS) would collect the city’s recycling.
- As part of the compromise, Waste Management agreed to dismiss legal proceedings and its referendum campaign that was aimed at overturning the city council’s vote to give CWS the city’s waste and recycling contract.
Dive Insight:
The tentative deal has not yet been finalized, as the City Council must approve the agreement. A special council meeting has been scheduled for later today.
The City Council had the final approval of the Oakland hauler contract in May. At the time, the city of Oakland was pushing for Waste Management to continue its waste services for the city, despite an expected increase in its proposed collection rates. CWS cried foul, saying that its bid was excluded even through it was lower than its competitor.
