VT hauler counts on real horsepower to collect waste, recycling

Dive Brief:

  • A hauler that uses horses to transport waste and recycling in Middlebury, VT was granted a local commercial hauler’s license by the Addison County Solid Waste Management District.
  • The company has been in operation since 1998 in Bristol, VT and now offers recycling services in Middlebury after a state law that goes into effect on July 1 mandates that waste companies must have recycling pick-up available to customers. 
  • The company collects between 130 and 150 bags of waste weekly, plus recyclables.

Dive Insight:

Mackinac Island, MI has used horse-drawn wagons to transport waste since 1992. The company serves residential and commercial customers to deliver trash, recycling and organics to the island’s solid waste facility. 

Alternative transport for waste collection is picking up speed. A Cleveland, OH-based startup that collects organic waste by bike was recently awarded a $20,000 grant to expand its services.
