Dive Brief:
- Backed by T. Boone Pickens, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. announced it will be the first company to distribute renewable natural gas in a commercial capacity in what has been called North America's largest effort to fuel automobiles with landfill gas.
- The company is planning to offer its natural gas, known as "Redeem," at 40 stations in California and is creating infrastructure for 400 refueling stations across the country.
- The fuel is made from waste streams from sewage treatment plants, landfills and dairy farms.
Dive Insight:
Clean Energy is getting some of the fuel from companies that produce it at landfills, and is currently constructing its own sites in which to produce biomethane in Texas, Michigan and Tennessee. The low price of the gas is made possible through federal incentives. "Redeem" is touted as providing a 90% reduction in carbon emissions when used instead of gas or diesel in a CNG, serving to effectively cut greenhouse gas output.
