Dive Brief:
- Arizona-based Right Away Disposal (RAD) just opened a $13 million, 30,000-square-foot recycling center, which means it will no longer be subcontracting to get its recycling done. The company provides trash and recycling pick up for residential customers in Florence, Queen Creek, Eloy, and Apache Junction among other Pinal County locations in Arizona.
- The MRF can handle 38,000 tons of aluminum, plastic, paper, cardboard and steel annually, though it does not process plastic.
- The facility launched nine months after RAD’s Regional Landfill, south of Picacho, opened. The landfill, which accepts 1,000 tons of trash a day, has a Geosynthetic Clay Liner system with HDPE flexible membrane liner geotextile material and sand to collect leachate.
Dive Insight:
The multimillion dollar investment in a local, high-tech MRF with screening and sorting capacity represents RAD’s commitment to sustainability, to investing in its own operations, and to the community—as well as reflects a sense of stewardship. On its website, RAD posts that it offers free cardboard recycling, e-cycling, and textile recycling, with proceeds from textiles going to charities.
RAD President Jeremy Taka said, "We were bringing our material to other locations and they were sorting it. Now we’re able to do it ourselves. We make sure it’s done to the level we want. ... We don’t have to rely on other companies to get the recycling done that we need. A lot of our service area is in Pinal County and Pima County, so it just gives us another option of something closer to home. It’s a little more economical."
