Dive Brief:
- Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd. announced it will submit a proposal for a 20-year contract to manage New York City’s containerized municipal solid waste (MSW).
- The request for proposals was spearheaded by the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), which is seeking a hauler to transport and process 3,000 tons of MSW after the city delivers it to one of two marine transfer stations located in Brooklyn.
- The DSNY sought bids for this specific contract previously; however, it reissued the request following uncertainty about securing the use of a rail yard in New Jersey.
Dive Insight:
Requests for the new contract are due on January 9, 2015. In its latest proposal, Republic Services will transport waste via rail to its Seneca Meadows landfill in upstate NY rather than using the New Jersey rail yard.
Using the train system instead of trucks to haul trash is expected to benefit the city in various ways, including substantial savings, reduced pollution, and less traffic congestion around the landfill itself.
In May, Waste Management inked a 20-year deal with NYC to transport up to 3,500 tons of waste by rail from the city to two of its landfills: the High Acres site in NY, and a landfill in VA.
