Dive Brief:
- The City of New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) received a massive number of applicants signing up to take the city’s sanitation exam.
- More than 94,000 people registered to take the test, which is offered every four years. According to the DSNY, there are only about 500 positions available in the department.
- The last time the test garnered this much interest was in 1993, when the DSNY cited that more than 101,000 people applied for a chance to take the test.
Dive Insight:
The sanitation test is one the most popular civil servant exams in New York City. The exam will be given in February of 2015.
This is the first sanitation test to be offered to applicants since 2007. The city administers tests for civil servant positions, but the sanitation exam was put on hold as the city instead pulled from the list generated in 2007 candidates—twice, in fact, due to a hiring freeze.
