• New York City announced the placement of additional solar-powered waste receptacles throughout Manhattan. 
• The number of Bigbelly trash cans now totals 174, up from 16 prior to the recent wave of installations. 
• The technologically advanced bins allow for more efficient use of both employees and resources. The bins alert crews when they are reaching capacity, and the design of the receptacle reduces the collection rate for each trash can.

The expansion is the result of a collaboration between the Department of Sanitation, the Alliance for Downtown New York, and Vector Media. The groups aim to place more receptacles in public spaces through the program. 

Kathryn Garcia, the New York City Department of Sanitation Commissioner, said, “Sanitation knows the importance of public space recycling, having already placed 2,912 baskets throughout the city for metal, glass and plastic or paper.”
