Dive Brief:
- On Aug. 1, Waste Management purchased Nordic Waste of Duluth, MN, but will keep the company's distinctive ship logo on its trucks and trash cans.
- Waste Management, which already operated in the city, rehired all of Nordic's drivers.
- Julie Ketchum of Waste Management said Nordic's 9,000 residential and 1,000 business customers should not notice a change in service, and the company will not raise prices during the transition.
Dive Insight:
Ever-expanding Waste Management plans to bring more efficiency to Nordic Waste's routes, folding some into the existing Waste Management schedule.
"What happens is you gain route density, meaning that (there are) more customers in a route," Ketchum told the News Tribune. "With that you'll be using one truck down the street, so in general just the fuel use to collect from more customers is less, so the overall cost for collection decreases and efficiencies are gained."
Waste Management also recently acquired Deffenbaugh Disposal Inc., as well as D.C. Trash Service in Russellville, AR.
