Dive Brief:
- Lake Country Disposal, based in Menomonee Falls, WI, has been acquired by K2 Waste Solutions. The deal was portrayed as a merger in a press release from K2.
- LCD will add K2 to its ownership structure, and K2 management will now serve on LCD’s management team. Based in Corpus Christi, TX, K2 had no contracts in Wisconsin prior to the acquisition, but LCD has reportedly been on K2’s radar.
- K2 co-president Eric Konik has business and family ties in Milwaukee — a fact he believes will be a strength for the merged company. "As a resident of the area, I was aware of their history in the marketplace and felt this was a wonderful opportunity for both entities," he said.
Dive Insight:
The merger follows several others in the industry, including six acquisitions so far this year by Advanced Disposal. K2 recently was launched by seasoned industry pros as a venture to acquire waste industry companies and create new ones. In a way, they are following the examples of others such as Mid America Recycling, whose owners see opportunity rather than difficulties in tough economic times for the industry.
