Dive Brief:
- Pacolet Milliken Enterprises Inc. and its subsidiary, Lockhart Power, have announced it will be constructing a new landfill-to-power plant in Union County, South Carolina.
- The Union County Landfill Energy plant will be built at the Republic Service's Upstate Regional landfill. Methane will be captured and converted into 3,200 kilowatts of electricity, and used to power 2,000 homes.
- Construction will begin in June. The companies behind the project expect the facility to begin operations by the end of 2014.
Dive Insight:
The plant will initially consist of two reciprocating combustion engines; each powers a 1,600 kilowatt generator. The company plans to increase the number of generators at the facility within a three year timeframe.
