Dive Brief:
- The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) formally announced that Jeff Murray has taken over as president of the organization for FY18. Murray was elected at the ISWA World Congress & WASTECON in Baltimore on Sept. 26.
- Murray is an associate and the solid waste section manager for HDR in Raleigh, NC. He is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina, Delaware and Virginia, and is certified by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. He also received that organization's Grand Prize Award for the development of a "Landfill Based Geothermal Heating System" in 2013.
- In addition to Murray, SWANA's other officers now include Rich Allen as past president, Frank Caponi as vice president, Michael Greenberg as treasurer, and Brenda Haney as secretary.
Dive Insight:
Murray joined SWANA in 1998, serving in multiple leadership positions on the Northern New England Chapter's board for 15 years. He also served as chair of the Training Committee for the SWANA Landfill Technical Division and coordinated revisions to the Manager of Landfill Operations certification course and exam in 2012. Prior to joining HDR in 2013, Murray was a principal and project manager at CMA Engineers in Portsmouth, NH.
Among his priorities, Murray wants to continue growing SWANA membership, collaborate with local chapters, improve industry safety and increase training opportunities. SWANA recently announced an online testing platform to expand access to offerings such as its new "Zero Waste Principles and Practices" course, among others.
In a video produced by HDR, Murray talks about the potential he sees as the industry trends more toward resource management than traditional waste management. Also in the video, Murray said he would like to be known within the industry as a "jack of all trades," who is "doing good work in a number of different aspects and managing people and projects effectively, and keeping clients more than satisfied with the work that we're doing."
"Jeff Murray has been a respected and high regarded leader in SWANA for years, and I am very excited to work closely with him in his new role as President," said David Biderman, SWANA Executive Director & CEO, in a press release.
