Dive Brief:
- A Lincoln, NE landfill gas-to-energy project, made along with Lincoln Electric Systems, is reducing methane emission and generating money for Lincoln.
- Taking landfill gas at the Bluff Road Landfill through 76 wells, the operation delivers the gas through pipes to the Terry Bundy Generating Station. It is then burned, creating electricity.
- Landfill gas is created by decomposing garbage. About half of the gas is made up of methane, and most of the leftover gas is comprised of carbon dioxide.
Dive Insight:
With the food service industry, residences and other sources providing a large amount of garbage that can be converted into usable energy, landfill gas is providing solutions to slowing global warming through lower methane emissions. It’s also a source of continuous reusable energy. The creation of new facilities to tap this form of energy bodes well for wider acceptance of this process.
