Dive Brief:
- Waste Management, Inc., Ventech Engineers International LLC, NRG Energy, Inc. and Velocys PLC have announced a joint venture to create renewable fuels and chemicals from biogas and natural gas using a smaller-scale gas-to-liquid (GTL) technology.
- Waste Management established the use of scaled down GTL using landfill gas. The company constructed and has operated a demo facility at the East Oak landfill in Oklahoma for more than 10,000 hours.
- The partnership is building its first facility, located at the East Oak landfill site. A decision will be finalized this year as to how the venture will proceed with the facility.

According to the press release, Joe Vaillancourt, Waste Management's vice president of corporate ventures, said "From developing gas recovery and cleanup techniques, to registering GTL diesel as a fuel for on-highway use, Waste Management has been a leader in this area. Velocys' leading smaller-scale GTL technology, Ventech's engineering capabilities and NRG's clean energy development expertise will complement Waste Management's strengths in the joint venture."
