Dive Brief:
- The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors have voted to implement a “Roadmap to a Sustainable Waste Management Future.”
- The plan was created by the L.A. County Department of Public Works with the help of other organizations.
- The draft depicts a general framework of strategies and initiatives geared toward effectively reducing L.A. County’s reliance on regional landfills.
Dive Insight:
The strategies are organized into four separate categories: programs and services, measuring results, facilities and infrastructure, and outreach and education.
The unincorporated communities in the county produce approximately 2.8 million tons of waste every year, 70% of which is diverted from landfills via reuse and recycling and through various waste reduction programs. Environmental laws have played a role in reducing waste and have impacted the waste management system in a positive manner.
The roadmap also states that 35 anaerobic digestion facilities will need to be constructed in order to effectively manage organic waste throughout L.A. County.
