Dive Brief:
- The city of Rexurg, Idaho has picked GE’s Monsal advanced anaerobic digestion system and its Monsal 70 technology to treat biosolids from the city’s wastewater treatment facility, GE recently announced. This will be the first North American use of GE’s Monsal technologies to help cities adhere to federal biosolid disposal standards.
- Monsal uses an anaerobic digestion process to treat sewage waste, and the Monsal 70 system pasteurizes the sludge. That process creates "Class A" biosolids, which can then be placed in a landfill.
- Anaerobic digestion involves microorganisms breaking down biodegradable material. Methane produced by this process is used for generating electricity or other forms of energy.
Dive Insight:
Rexburg required a new way to treat sludge from its wastewater treatment plant before the sludge could be sent to a landfill.
"GE was the only company that afforded the specialized equipment that we needed to install before the winter months begin so that we can meet our federal environmental requirements," said Rexburg public works director John Millar.
