Dive Brief:
- Walker County, GA, recently got the green light from Georgia Environmental Finance Authority to expand the county’s landfill. GEFA will provide a loan of up to $800,000 for the landfill expansion.
- County landfill director Bill Byrd said the county may not need the full $800,000 for the expansion. The 120-acre landfill is used for construction and demolition waste.
- Walker County’s municipal waste currently is temporarily held at a transfer station before being hauled to a Fort Payne landfill. County officials said if they cannot expand the landfill, they’ll also have to have construction and demolition waste trucked out of town.
Dive Insight:
If the county has to stop using its own landfill, county taxpayers would have to pay more to dispose of trash, landfill director Bill Byrd said. The extra cost could be significant, he added, noting that a contractor bringing slabs of concrete to the county-owned landfill currently pays $24.50/ton to deposit such waste, versus a $35.50/ton fee the contractor would pay at another landfill.
