Dive Brief:
- Duke Energy Carolinas is looking to begin using biogas from pig waste at its Buck and Dan Combined Cycle plants. The Charlotte, NC-based utility wants state regulators to register the two sites as renewable energy after it begins to use the biogas at the plants.
- A small amount of biogas will be used. That gas will be less than 1% of the fuel that Duke Energy Carolinas burns at the two plants, Duke spokesman Randy Wheeless said.
- Using biogas that will come from sites outside North Carolina will help Duke meet the state’s requirements for it to be producing from swine waste some of the power it sells there.

Duke Energy Carolinas, along with other utilities in North Carolina, have repeatedly asked state officials to be allowed to delay implementation of the swine waste biogas requirements. They claim there is not enough available high-grade swine waste biogas to meet demand.
