Dive Brief:
- A nearly two-year-long ban on electronic wastes in Colorado landfills has resulted in televisions and other e-waste being illegally dumped across the state. Now, Montezuma County landfill is accepting e-waste and plastics for recycling, but dropping off that e-waste is not free.
- Disposal fees at Montezuma's landfill are $20 for televisions that are dropped off, $15 for computer monitors, $5 for computers and $5 for boxes of electronics such as cords, faxes, printers, stereos and speakers.
- Electronics which are dropped at the landfill are sent to Natural Evolution Inc., an Albuquerque e-waste recycling firm.
Dive Insight:
E-waste disposal is never really free. Since Colorado banned e-waste from its landfills in 2013 to keep toxins out of them, there’s been a spike in illegal e-waste dumping there. But now, residents and businesses have an alternative.
