Dive Brief:
- CleanScapes, a solid waste and recycling company, is seeking an injunction that would prevent the Bellevue City Council, in Washington, from signing a contract with Republic Services.
- Republic Services was the highest bidder, by almost 13%, for the sanitation contract with the city; CleanScapes argues that criteria for the winning bid was ignored and was therefore illegal.
- CleanScapes is requesting a King County Superior Court judge to issue a temporary restraining order to prevent Republic's contract until the hearing for the preliminary injunction.
Dive Insight:
Republic Services has been the city's waste services provider and many council members said they valued the stability the decision gives them. CleanScapes performed better than Republic across multiple categories for the selection criteria scores. According to the Seattle Times, city spokeswoman Emily Christensen said earlier this week, “It is the position of the city to move forward with negotiating the contract as directed by the council.”
