Dive Brief:
-
CleanScapes, a solid waste and recycling company based in Seattle, Wash., was awarded a contract with the city of Burien, Wash., and will handle its waste collection, recycling and yard clippings as part of the contracted services.
-
The seven-year contract will start on June 1, 2014 after the city's current contract with Waste Management has expired.
-
The company will expand the services previously offered to residents, as well as providing the community with a lower residential trash bill; the city will benefit from the switch, as the fees paid to the city via the franchise fee will generate additional revenue.
Dive Insight:
CleanScapes will also create a retail store as well as a customer service center. It is also planning an outreach program for residents.
It will be interesting to see how the CleanScapes retail store ties into the waste services offered by this company. Could it be the beginning of a new trend?
