Dive Insight:
According to the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent figures, construction spending in November 2016 was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of nearly $1.2 trillion. This was up more than 4% from November 2015 and represents a growing trend in recent years. As anticipated by many in the waste industry, this ongoing trend will be good for business and is likely to continue this year.
"Austin’s growth spurt has been incredible, and we can see new construction and building projects starting up all across the metro area," said Chuck Herb, owner of AYD Waste Services, in a press release. "It’s exciting to be a part of all this, to be able to supply much-needed recycling and hauling services amidst all the construction that is going on."
In addition to the ongoing construction boom seen in major cities from Los Angeles to New York, the industry could also see new potential in government projects as President-elect Donald Trump has pledged major infrastructure spending. While some in the waste industry have expressed wariness about what his administration may hold, they could benefit from this increased economic activity if it comes through as promised.
